Rock cut photogrammetry 1

How photoscanning enables detailed rock cut Inspections - Streetside version

A high-quality 3D photoscan is a comprehensive and dimensionally accurate copy of its real world counterpart, which makes it a great tool for performing detailed inspections safely from wherever you are.
In this example, Fractuscan photoscanned a streetside rock cut with the aim to inspect it for rockfall hazards.

Rockfall is a potential hazard in roadside rock cuts which can threaten the safety of road users. If a rock detaches from the rock wall and reaches the road, the consequences can be disastrous. The triggers of rockfalls vary from structural, environmental, including rain, freeze-thaw cycle, sun, wind, melting snow, channelled runoff, erosion, to anthropogenic causes.

Rock mass characterization is essential to identify where blocks are forming. Potentially unstable blocks should then be analysed to determine which blocks can reach the road area.

Photoscanning works by capturing hundreds or thousands of photographs  and processing them in photogrammetric reconstruction software to produce a realistic representation of the target area.

Photoscanning of streetside rock cuts can be done from the air with a drone and/or from a car driving at normal traffic speeds, thus there is no need to work directly at the rock face and interruptions to the users of the streets is minimal.  The analysis and inspection work is all performed safely at the office.

The collected photoscan can be used in rock mass characterization, rock mechanical modelling, and risk assessment.

The photoscan saves the state of the whole rock cut for future reference.

Fractuscan specializes in photoscanning and condition analysis of infrastructure, mining, and real estate assets. Do you think we could help you?
